Companion to John Ireland's eloquent and pastoral Downland Suite
is this graceful and amiable concerto for the rare combination of
violin and piano. While marvelling at the brilliant
achievement of 14 year old Mendelssohn, spare a thought for
Hindemith who composed Trauermusik in just 6 hours!
Broadcast that same evening to mourn the passing of King George V,
it has earned a well deserved place in the repertoire. Dvořák's
delightful and warmly expressive Serenade makes the perfect foil.
Tender, wistful, vivacious and exquisitely bittersweet by turns, it
is infused with the captivating folk music of his native
Bohemia.
