Concluding Imogen Cooper's epic Schubert cycle, the
Reliquie Sonata's two movements make a wonderfully lyrical
fragment of great emotional impact, and the four lovely Impromptus
that follow also contain some of his best loved piano music. This A
major Sonata, one of three composed during the last months of his
life and not published until long after his death, is now widely
admired for its depth of emotional expression. As Schumann
wrote: 'If only he could have known the renown that now is
his... it is a rare life-work that bears so clearly the stamp of
its creator as does his.'
'it was her cleareyed, warmhearted assessment of its
philosophical implications that made her account
remarkable.'
