After the powerful drama of Verdi's Force of Destiny
overture (surely the only opera at the end of which
all the principal characters have been killed) comes
the gentlest and most intimate of romantic piano concertos, at
times like a loving conversation between Robert and Clara Schumann.
The second half opens with the brilliance of Tchaikovsky's musical
portrayal of Italy and concludes with the suite from Prokofiev's
hilarious music for the film about the non-existent
Lieutenant Kijé.
