With Andrew Watts, Principal bassoon - A lousy crew of foreign fiddlers - German and Italian musicians in 18th century London.

The OAE is one the finest period instrument orchestras in the world. Their concert reveals just how long London has been one of the greatest musical capitals of the world. The orchestra performs the work of four composers active in London in the mid 1700s. It seems you could barely move in the city without bumping into a composer at that time! Thomas Arne, who composed Rule Britannia, is represented with an aria from Artaxerxes; a real blockbuster of an opera. The OAE will also perform work by Karl Abel and J.S. Bach's youngest son Johann Christian, whom Mozart so admired.
The evening concludes with a wonderfully passionate and powerful Haydn symphony.

Pre Concert Talk: An OAE player will introduce the concert.

Tonight's concert ended to applause and loud cheers from a packed house. Why? Because it was cleverly conceived, the orchestra was superbly led by Rachel Podger, singer Rachel Nicholls was outstanding (and encored her second aria) and the whole ensemble was on top (London-standard) form.

This was an outstanding, superlative-worthy concert! The OAE is always brilliant but even they surpassed themselves with this one! And we could take a lot more of Rachel Nicholls' singing - please book her again as fast as possible - the reception given to her by the audience said it all. Another wonderful Bradford evening!
