Musical Director Mike Daniels reflects on another successful WYJO concert
Of all the groups based at the WMC the luckiest must be WYJO, having been the last to perform before lockdown in March 2020 with Empirical and one of first back in June with Nikki Iles, losing only one weekend last November. Even so, last weekend was eagerly anticipated as we welcomed back the ‘mothership' in the guise of Mark and four Ambassadors in our fourth year working as a NYJO regional jazz academy.
Our own academy group started the concert with Blues for Five and a piece composed in one of the monthly Saturday morning sessions before handing the baton to Mark and WYJO with a selection of ten pieces including Yes Please, the piece that they recorded for a virtual performance last November. A good set of ten pieces including A Night in Tunisia and two of Thad Jones’s finest and trickiest charts stretched all sections of the band and the saxes must take full credit for navigating a fiendish solo section in the Groove Merchant. Some fine soloing proved that our work with the Jazz Academy is paying off which in turn makes our performances more mature. Young musicians from all over the county and beyond should be knocking on the door to be part of WYJO who entertained a healthy sized audience. Another success for Wiltshire Jazz Academy!
