Lewis Leaker, Creative Learning Assistant, reflects on West of England Youth Orchestra's Summer Course

After only being able to conduct virtual courses this past year, we were extremely excited to have the West of England Youth Orchestra back at the Centre for this year’s summer course.

The orchestra saw a number of new faces this year, as well as the return of various alumni players to help lend a hand. Through the excellence guidance of conductor Tim Redmond and our team of music tutors, the orchestra brilliantly prepared for Shostakovich’s 5th symphony and Mahler’s Totenfeier.

With a great week of rehearsals behind them, the orchestra sadly had to cancel their weekend performances, due to a suspected Covid-19 case within the orchestra. We apologise to everyone that had a ticket for the weekend, and we thank you again for your understanding. We would like to thank the staff, parents and most importantly the players for all their efforts these past few weeks. We will see you all again for WEYO’s Winter course. We will be back!

We were also pleased to launch our 'Buy a Seat on the Bus' fundraising campaign to ensure WEYO players can get to and from WMC for their courses. It’s been a very challenging year for the Youth Orchestras, with virtual projects the only means of connecting and performing together and it's great to ensure transport won't be an issue to reunite our players this year. So far, we have raised over £2,500 towards our goal of £3,000, and would like to sincerely thank everyone who has kindly donated so far. If you would like to contribute to this fundraiser, you can still do so here.
