Over the Easter Holidays fifty talented young musicians were rehearsing and performing at Wiltshire Music Centre with West of England Youth Orchestra (WEYO). This Easter’s performance included Walton’s Crown Imperial, Ravel’s Bolero and Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F which was performed with our Artist in Residence, Joanna MacGregor. This was a wonderful opportunity for local young people, many players reported that over the course they learnt about how to develop their own interpretation of the music, they gained knowledge from professional musicians about a career in music and developed their musical skills.

On the final day of WEYO’s course they shared the building with the incredible Zone Club. Zone Club are a group of young adults with learning disabilities and special education needs who meet monthly and create music together. The group is supported by a group of expert musicians and music therapists. Every month Zone Club explore something new, led by what the group are interested in and produce a project to share with their friends and families.

We were delighted that Zone Club and WEYO were able to meet on this special occasion to share a musical experience, with Joanna also in attendance. We wanted to take this opportunity for two flagship projects to come together, and as such Zone Club were invited to see WEYO’s rehearsal in which they performed Ravel’s piece. Zone Club were instantly inspired by this performance and created an incredible response that including dance, song, and music from the band and percussion group. In turn, the members of the Youth Orchestra came to be the audience for Zone Club’s performance which energised the Orchestra as they went into their performance.

This is just one excellent example of the unique work that Wiltshire Music Centre carries out in combining elements of our Artistic and Creative Learning programmes to create special musical moments at every opportunity. It was wonderful to see these two groups of local musicians coming together to share their energy and work and we are delighted that both groups took the opportunity to learn from each other as well as inspiring one another!
