The so-named Nelson Mass is arguably Haydn’s greatest composition and the original title Missa in Angustiis (‘Mass for times of distress’) reflects the uncertain times of 1797 and the composer’s intense fear for the future of Austria. Haydn’s first and last symphonies complete this thrilling programme, including Symphony 104 which was a huge success at its London premiere in 1795. Alongside OAE Rising Stars soloists, we are delighted to showcase the internationally renowned Choir of Clare College (Alumni) with members of old and new.
