Maxim Calver was a finalist in the 2018 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and will be the soloist in Shostakovich’s dramatic first Cello Concerto. Mahler wrote that a symphony ‘must embrace everything’ and his mighty Symphony No 5 includes the famous Adagietto which was used in the film Death in Venice.
