HAYDN String Quartet Op 33 No 1
BRITTEN String Quartet No 2
MOZART String Quartet K589
SHOSTAKOVICH  Two Pieces for String Octet Op 1

Written at the peak of Haydn’s powers, the first of his ‘Russian’ quartets balances fast-paced drama with his characteristic wit and humour. By comparison, Britten’s second Quartet balances the harmonic exploration of the period with a melodic clarity greatly influenced by the music of Purcell. Mozart’s late ‘Prussian’ Quartet sets up the programme’s finale where WMC’s Young Quartet in Residence join WMC’s Resident Quartet for a performance of Shostakovich’s edgy and virtuosic Two Pieces for Octet.
