DEBUSSY Selections from ‘Études’, L. 136
GEORGE FU Passacaglia on a theme by Radiohead
BRAHMS Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Händel, Op. 24
City Music Foundation Artist George Xiaoyuan Fu plays an inspired recital filled with compositions inspired by other works. The programme opens with a selection from Debussy’s Études, short studies that look back at Chopin while deploying colours that reach toward the avant-garde.
The pianist’s own composition, Passacaglia on a theme by Radiohead, is a fantasy composed upon a theme from Airbag, one in which the theme appears “in many different guises... always staying true to the major-minor/yin-yang seesawing that is at the core of its bittersweet, Sehnsucht-ridden DNA.” Finally, Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Händel is a youthful piece filled with ingenuity and variety, culminating in a highly complex and exciting fugue.

Supporting the development of young musicians has been at the heart of WMC’s work for over 20 years. Founded in 1997 as a rehearsal space for Wiltshire Young Musicians, the Centre provides year-round learning and performance opportunities to support young musicians at every stage of their development: from workshops in schools right through to their first performances on the WMC stage.
Our Young Artist Fund was launched in 2012 to support young artists at the start of their professional careers with performance opportunities, mentoring and support to stretch and develop their talent. Since then, the fund has supported over 70 young artists.
Please consider making a donation to the WMC Young Artist Fund to enable us to continue to support the next generation of professional musicians.
