BBC Folk Awards winner honours the legendary lead singer of Fairport Convention
One of Britain’s most distinctive songwriters and vocalists and often likened to Sandy Denny herself, Josienne Clarke brings the iconic singer’s hits to a new generation of listeners. Accompanied by a folk-rock set up of guitar, piano, bass and drums, Clarke performs songs including An Old-Fashioned Waltz, The Sea and Who Know’s Where The Time Goes.
About Josienne Clarke
After breaking free of imposed music industry strictures, Clarke has successfully redefined herself and her career as a resolutely independent female solo artist and performer, engaging with the industry on her terms (she has her own record label, Corduroy Pink), and drawing in a devoted audience as a result. Having redefined herself across five powerful solo albums, she is now stepping up to honour Sandy Denny – a singer with whom she has often been compared – to bring Denny’s music to a new generation of listeners.
Clarke was barely 17 when an audience member at a local folk sing-around first told her she sounded like Sandy. They wouldn’t be the last to draw that comparison. Songs are there to be listened to, and loved, and to be entered and inhabited too, redecorated perhaps, but without changing the foundations, or the structure. Clarke is the artist and singer to inhabit them in ways that bring all their intimacies, their melancholy, strength and warmth up close and personal.
