Spend an inspiration afternoon learning from jazz superstars Claire Martin (voice) and Nikki Iles (piano)!

Who is this for?

Up to 8 jazz vocalists aged 12–21 who are confident and committed to developing their voice. These vocalists will need to bring a standard jazz song with them. They will have the opportunity to workshop this piece with Claire and Nikki, receiving invaluable feedback and guidance.

Up to 2 confident jazz pianists aged 12–21 who are comfortable transposing by sight. These pianists will have the chance to accompany a vocalist, receiving feedback and tips from Nikki and Claire.

Spectators – this event is an open session and we welcome young jazz musicians to come and observe the masterclass workshop free of charge

Cost

£30 full price for all participating vocalists/pianists.  If this cost is a barrier, bursary spaces are available.  The workshop is free to observers, but a donation is welcome and can be given on the day.

Participating vocalists/pianists will receive a complimentary ticket to Claire and Nikki’s performance with their ensemble, iG4, at 7.30pm on the same evening.

Claire Martin has to worldwide critical acclaim established herself as a tour de force on the UK jazz scene, gaining many awards – including the British Jazz Awards eight times – during her career, which spans over three decades. In 2018 she was the proud recipient of the BASCA Gold Badge Award for her contribution to jazz. “Claire Martin ranks among the four or five finest female jazz vocalists on the planet” (Jazz Times USA)

Nikki Iles’ recent work has taken her across the world as a member of the Julian Arguelles Octet, The Kenny Wheeler Big Band, Claire Martin and ‘The North’, a Scandinavian/Anglo/Canadian collaboration featuring Percy Pursglove and Anders Morgensen. With a parallel career as a widely respected teacher in composition and arranging, Nikki is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music. “Nikki Iles is a formidable jazz presence rising to her full height” (The Guardian)
