Celebrating 100 years of Louis Armstrong and 1920s Harlem with UK jazz's hottest talent

Reimagining the spirit of Louis Armstrong’s genre-defining 1920s Hot Five band, this all-star line-up features the UK’s best jazz talent including clarinettist – and our Artist in Residence – Giacomo Smith. He appears with: Joe Webb on piano, trumpeter Laura Jurd, Daniel Higham on trombone, Luke McCarthy on drums and Honey Boulton on banjo. Together with Giacomo, they  perform pre-swing repertoire with a twist, from Armstrong, WC Handy, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, and Fletcher Henderson. Blurring blues, ragtime, swing, and Latin, they bring a contemporary flair to jazz from this pioneering time and launch our jazz season in style.

Celebrating jazz legend Louis Armstrong, this evening also features a suite of music called “1925” written by group founder Giacomo Smith, which loosely commemorates the 100th Anniversary of Louis Armstrong’s First Hot Five Recordings.

Giacomo Smith’s ensemble is a nod to Louis Armstrong’s ground-breaking ensemble of the same name recorded way back in 1925. Giacomo’s ongoing exploration and fascination for this era of music has made him a regular guest on shows from BBC Radio Four, BBC6 and Soho Radio. In 2018, he was personally invited by Wynton Marsalis to perform at the Lincoln Centre for their 30th anniversary gala event.

The Hot Five collective have appeared at stages across the UK including London’s Ronnie Scott’s, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, and Snape Maltings.

BIOGRAPHY

Giacomo Smith is an accomplished jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer known for his distinctive sound and mastery of both traditional and contemporary jazz styles. Born in Italy and raised in the United States, Smith developed a deep appreciation for jazz early in life.

Smith’s career spans a wide range of collaborations, from performances with the Kansas Smitty’s House Band, a collective renowned for its innovative approach to classic jazz, to work with some of the most respected musicians in the jazz world. He has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Jamie Cullum, Bireli Lagrene, China Moses, Joe Lovano, Guy Barker, Julian Bliss and many others. In addition to his career as a performer, he has produced albums for Jamie Cullum, Damian Lewis, Zara McFarlane, Jas Kayser, and Joe Stilgoe. His versatility allows him to seamlessly blend the virtuosic techniques of earlier jazz traditions with modern sensibilities, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-looking.

Smith is an active educator and composer, contributing original works to the jazz canon and mentoring the next generation of musicians. He is teaches at London’s Royal Academy of Music and at Django in June in Northampton, MA
