Telling the story of Renaissance art through sound

Programme to include:

JOSQUIN Domine labia mea aperies from Miserere mei, Deus: Part III
JEAN MOUTON Gloria from Missa Tu es Petrus
JOHANNES BRASSART Ave Maria
JOHN DUNSTAPLE Regina coeli a3

Combining Renaissance music and art, The Marian Consort – an innovative and creative vocal ensemble – tell the story of Renaissance art through sound. Bringing together visual images and voice in this unique concert format, you’ll see and hear angels singing from altarpieces, ancient gods competing in musical contests and more.

The pre-concert talk is really where things start, in which Prof Tim Shephard will guide audiences through how the concert has been constructed. Tim (who is based at Sheffield University) was a lead academic on a project that looked at all the works of Italian Renaissance Art with a reference to music in it. Placing the provenance of each work, it was then paired with a piece of music. He explains more in the video on this page.

The concert itself is then a presentation of these artworks and music united. The artworks are projected in very high definition on a screen behind the singers, gently moving to highlight particular details.

This project is in collaboration with the University of Sheffield.

There will be a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm with Professor Tim Shephard, University of Sheffield.
