Celebrating 100 years of Louis Armstrong with UK jazz's hottest talent

Reimagining the spirit of Louis Armstrong’s genre defining 1920s Hot Five band, this all-star line-up featuring the UK’s best jazz talent including clarinettist – and our Artist in Residence – Giacomo Smith, Joe Webb and Laura Jurd. Together the five-piece perform pre-swing repertoire with a twist from Armstrong, WC Handy, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, and Fletcher Henderson. Blurring blues, ragtime, swing, and Latin, they bring a contemporary flair to jazz from this pioneering time and launch our jazz season in style.

Celebrating jazz legend Louis Armstrong, this evening also features a suite of music called “1925” written by group founder Giacomo Smith, which loosely commemorates the 100th Anniversary of Louis Armstrong’s First Hot Five Recordings.

Giacomo Smith’s Hot Five is a nod to Louis Armstrong’s ground-breaking ensemble of the same name recorded way back in 1925. His ongoing exploration and fascination for this era of music has made him a regular guest on shows from BBC Radio Four, BBC6 and Soho Radio. In 2018, he was personally invited by Wynton Marsalis to perform at the Lincoln Centre for their 30th anniversary gala event.

The Hot Five collective have appeared at stages across the UK including London’s Ronnie Scott’s, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, and Snape Maltings.
