13 piece ensemble with 9 saxophones, led by musician and producer, Will Gregory (Goldfrapp), explore the canon of influential American composer Moondog (aka The Viking of Sixth Avenue), the blind American musician and composer, who influenced everyone from Leonard Bernstein to Philip Glass. In 1994, 5 years before his death, Moondog collaborated with London Saxophonic, recording Sax pax for a Pax – an album blending classical & jazz.

In this special performance, London Saxophonic bring these extraordinary compositions back to life. Opening tonight is innovative saxophonist/composer Robert Stillman (The Smile) who fuses American Folk Music, Jazz, Minimalism, and experimental electronic music with improvised cassette tape symphonies. Awesome, playful and virtuosic. Plus, DJ set in the bar after from David Wrench, the innovative Welsh record producer and musician, who has worked with everyone from David Byrne to Blur and Frank Ocean.
Who was Moondog?
Moondog (1916-1999) was the adopted name of American composer, poet, musician and instrument inventor Louis Thomas Hardin. Blinded in an accident at the age of 16, he developed a unique musical language that combined classical counterpoint, jazz, Native American rhythms and minimalist ideas.
A familiar figure on the streets of New York, where he became known as“The Viking of Sixth Avenue” for his distinctive cloak and horned helmet, Moondog composed prolifically and built his own instruments while living largely outside the musical establishment. His inventive, rhythmically driven works went on to influence generations of composers, including minimalist pioneers Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
Today, Moondog is celebrated as one of the most original musical voices of the twentieth century. His best-known composition, Bird’s Lament, found a new audience when it was sampled by Mr Scruff for the international hit Get a Move On!, introducing Moondog’s music to a new generation of listeners.
