PURCELL Suite from Abdelazer
HANDEL Dixit Dominus
Celebrating twenty-five years with musical director Michael Daniels, Cantamus delves into the English Baroque performing exquisite works by Purcell and Handel. Welcome to all the pleasures that delight is one of Purcell’s enchanting odes for St Cecilia’s Day featuring glorious solos and choruses including a delightful trio for bass, tenor and countertenor. His instrumental suite from Abdelazer includes the famous Rondeau later used by Britten as his theme for the Young Person’s guide to the Orchestra. Handel’s explosive Dixit Dominus written when he was a precocious 22-year-old includes dazzling choruses and glorious solos for five part choir and five soloists accompanied by a hand-picked period string ensemble of musicians with whom Cantamus have fond associations. This will be an evening of pleasures to delight!
